David has extensive human-centered industrial design experience developing complex medical and emerging tech devices for MIT startups to Fortune 100 companies. He leads multi-disciplinary teams to develop innovative design solutions that consistently add value, exceed user expectations and create market-leading products. He founded Octane Design, Inc, in 1990 to help his clients integrate design-thinking methodologies into their development process and create first in class devices. David has received 15 US patents, 3 international patents and 9 design excellence awards.

Some of his most notable accomplishments have dramatically improved patient care which include:
near-patient critical care analyzers for Siemens, a precision biopsy device for Boston Scientific, surgical instruments for Johnson & Johnson and startup ZSX Medical, patient monitors for Philips and Analogic, and a 3D ear canal scanning handheld device for disruptive technology MIT startup Lantos Technology.

David is very active in the Boston design community: as an industrial design advisor for several MIT Sloan MBA product development courses, an adjunct industrial design professor at Wentworth Institute of Technology and Mass Art, guest critic at RISD and held volunteer officer positions in the Boston Chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). He has enjoyed mentoring and coaching numerous aspiring industrial designers over his career.

Siemens RAPIDPoint 400/500 Blood Gas Analyzer

The RAPIDPOINT 400/500 quickly became the industry leader in the newly emerging point of care analyzer market. It enables clinicians to understand a critical patient’s physiological state much faster and easier in high stress situations. Worldwide user research and insights garnered during ER, OR, ICU and NICU sight visits informed, focused and drove the entire product development effort.
